With the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Nvidia once again reinforces its high-end offer, which remains uncompetitive. Close to the Titan X, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti intends to attract more players with a revised price of $700 CDN and performance up slightly. That’s what we’re going to check in our entire file.

Nvidia’s strategy seems to be well established. Its biggest chips, complex to produce, are first introduced on a graphics card of the Titan range. Very expensive, these give the most fortunate players exclusive access to a more powerful GPU. Some time later, this GPU appears in the classic GeForce range with a (more) affordable price and a configuration adapted to the competitive environment of the moment or to come.

  • GeForce GTX Titan ( -> GeForce GTX 780 Ti
  • GeForce GTX Titan X > GeForce GTX 980 Ti
  • Titan X (Pascal) -> GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti was a castrated version of the GeForce GTX Titan X, with fewer active computational units and a 6GB memory instead of 12GB. Conversely, the GTX 780 Ti had more ” Units that the GTX Titan but without the support of the calculation in double precision and with 3 GB instead of 6 GB.

For the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Nvidia has opted for a different approach that corresponds to a pure and simple replacement of the Titan X. Its configuration and its level of performance are similar, which makes the second no longer of interest and Will probably be updated shortly.

The GTX 1080 Ti takes over the same GP102 GPU, a Pascal generation, configured in the same way at the level of the computing units with 28 of its 30 active blocks. To learn more about this GPU, we invite you to consult the page dedicated to it in the Titan X file . And to understand one of the elements that make the efficiency of the Nvidia GPUs, we recommend a short tour by this news on the Tile Caching .

If the computing units have been preserved, Nvidia has deactivated one of its 12 memory controllers, which reduces the 384-bit to 352-bit bus and the L2 cache from 3072 KB to 2816 KB. Bandwidth is however to deplore since Nvidia compensates this by the use of a faster GDDR5X with a throughput of 11 Gbps. The only tangible impact is the reduction in the amount of onboard memory that goes from 12 to 11 GB but in practice this will obviously make very little difference for the players.
